India’s lighting industry has witnessed significant growth in the first half of 2025, with the LED segment registering an 11.2% year-on-year increase in domestic sales, according to data released by the Indian Electrical & Electronics Manufacturers' Association (IEEMA).
This growth is largely fueled by India’s expanding Smart Cities Mission, which continues to modernize urban infrastructure with energy-efficient lighting systems. Over 80 cities have launched large-scale LED street lighting retrofitting projects since January 2025.
Additionally, the government’s ongoing UJALA (Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All) program has distributed over 50 million LED bulbs in rural areas during the first two quarters of 2025, boosting nationwide adoption of energy-efficient lighting.
Export markets have also played a vital role in this expansion. Indian lighting manufacturers reported a 9.6% increase in overseas shipments, especially to markets in Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. The "Make in India" initiative and trade-friendly policies have made Indian-made LED products more competitive globally.
Industry experts predict continued growth in H2 2025, with expectations of further adoption of smart lighting, solar-powered fixtures, and IoT-integrated systems across government and private sectors.
“India is rapidly becoming a global hub for LED lighting innovation and production,” said R. K. Sharma, Director at LuminTech India Pvt Ltd. “With rising energy costs, domestic demand, and digital infrastructure projects, we see strong momentum heading into 2026.”
